Terry Brooks - Seeker of Truth series
After going through all eleven books in the Seeker of Truth series, I finally feel like I can put forward my say on them.
While each book feels entertaining individually, I found that the series as a whole seemed to drag on into what felt like perpetuity. It seems like at the beginning of every book, some event from the previous triggers a new cataclysmic event capable of destroying all of mankind or the magic that is vital to the world.
I must admit, it frustrated me greatly that the main protagonist (Richard) and his allies simply would not kill the main antagonist (Jagang). While it was made abundantly clear that the ideas that Jagang stood for were the real enemy, the fact is that Richard’s path would have been much simpler and easier with Jagang out of the way.
Like the Ayn Rand books, there was also a heavy overtone of anti-religion throughout the latter half of the series. Much of the later books is devoted to the struggle between living for yourself in the present world versus proving yourself through sacrifice in order to have a better afterlife. See it how you will, I’m not about to inject my ideas on the subject into that particular debate.
All in all, the series was entertaining enough, though it went on needlessly long. A fairly decent read if you’re bored and want to kill a lot of time.
