Dear Writers … (#2)
I want the writer to make me suspend my disbelief; I want to be in some other place and scene of the writer’s devising.
- John D. MacDonald.
As James Scott Bell says (who quotes this in his book), “we must weave a dreamscape for our readers.” Don’t make excuses like “that’s too outrageous” or “they’d never believe that.” Given a bit of reasoning, readers will swallow it whole. So let your imagination run wild, and write whatever dream you think up. That’s why we love to write, after all.
